Firsthand Account — TCM Rescue of Acute Liver Failure: Real-Time Documentation (Part 3)

2026-06-17

Today, June 17, our hospital continued to follow up on the recovery progress of Mr. Qi from Taizhou, whose treatment began on May 18. Currently, the patient’s liver failure continues to improve, and his terminal malignant tumor condition remains relatively stable. Having met the clinical discharge criteria, he was successfully discharged on June 16. The patient developed acute liver failure during chemotherapy due to hepatic metastasis from gastric malignancy. His liver function tests showed a total bilirubin level of 572.7 μmol/L (see Figure 1) and a prothrombin time of 21.1 seconds (see Figure 2). Dr. Xia Bang'en, a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) physician (Medical License No.: 541330283000002), administered targeted treatment based on pattern differentiation, primarily using a compound decoction centered on Smilax glabra.

A follow-up examination on May 22 revealed that following oral administration of the TCM decoction, the patient's total bilirubin had retreated from its explosive progression to 539.2 μmol/L (see Figure 3), and his prothrombin time (PT) had rapidly decreased to 12 seconds (see Figure 4), returning to the normal range within days. Mr. Qi’s critical condition was effectively brought under control, and he was preliminarily out of life-threatening danger.

During subsequent continuous monitoring and consolidation therapy with TCM, the patient’s damp-toxin gradually cleared, liver qi stagnation was relieved, and spleen-stomach digestive function steadily recovered. Ascites and jaundice continued to subside, while symptoms such as fatigue and loss of appetite were markedly alleviated. Discharge examinations on June 16 showed that the patient’s total bilirubin had dropped to 68.9 μmol/L, coagulation function indicators remained consistently normal (see Figure 5), and all liver function parameters showed steady improvement. The liver’s detoxification, synthetic, and metabolic functions progressively recovered. Imaging examinations indicated significant shrinkage of the metastatic liver tumors. Overall, the patient’s condition stabilized, meeting the criteria for discharge upon improvement.

The patient stated, "My physical discomfort has continuously subsided; I feel relaxed both physically and mentally, and my diet and strength have recovered well. I am satisfied with the therapeutic outcome of this TCM-centered treatment."

Our hospital will continue to conduct follow-up visits, advise the patient on home care precautions, and provide ongoing guidance on pattern-differentiation-based nurturing according to his recovery status to support his steady rehabilitation. We hereby remind readers: TCM emphasizes treatment based on pattern differentiation. As each individual’s constitution and condition differ, treatment plans and outcomes vary individually.
